First thing to do in 2012-Overhaul your medicine cabinet!

To make our home a safe place for our children this 2012 and for the rest of years to come is to overhaul our medicine cabinet and this should be done before the year ends or on the first days of 2012.

Here's what you should do in overhauling your medicine cabinet.

1. Take everything all of your medicine cabinet.
2. Check out expiration dates. Be sure to throw out all expired and outdated medicines. If there's something you're not sure of,call your pharmacist and ask her about its shelf life..
3.Discard old tubes of creams that have been hardened or cracked. Throw away liquid medicines that may look cloudy or flimsy. These are signs that they're spoiled.
4.If the medicine is not in its original container and was not labeled properly, don't take chance and discard them all. Remember that medicines have tinted container as protection against exposure to light. If there's no label, throw them.
5.Bear in mind that every medication is a potential poison so keep them out of reach of children. Label them accordingly.Even vitamins should be kept away from children as they can also cause danger of poisoning.
6. Throw away old prescriptions that have been used in the past. Remember that prescription is made for a specific condition and repeated use for same condition may pose dangers. Better check it first with your doctor.
7. Make a new notes for emergency first aids and numbers to call in more readable and clearer notes and throw away those old notes that are already  not readable.

When you are done with your overhauling, it's time to stock your medicine cabinet with new emergency and first aid medicines that are properly sealed and labeled.

We turn to our medicine cabinet during emergency and therefore it should be full of items that can save life during emergencies and also things that will help us do some first aids. Don't forget to include a whistle and teach your children how and when to use it during emergencies.

Take Care of the Caregiver (MOMS)

Taking care of your family is a very active undertaking. In order for you to continue doing the task for your family you have to restore yourself. You don't do it in just a day or two but everyday of your life. Although this may sound being selfish, you can't do your best when you are always overwhelmed, exhausted, irritable and burned out. You have to get breaks to do the task with all your best capacity.

You will feel pressured too much of the time when you tend to neglect yourself. This is  of course  not  detrimental  to  your children and your significant other. You need to have a plan time away from your children to care for yourself and your other relationships. Here are some ways how to take care of yourself as the caregiver of the family.

Keep your body healthy-Take away for some time daily in your life from children and have a regular exercise. A hot tub bath is also a good way to keep yourself healthy and have a  refreshed body and mind. Eat a healthy diet but do not "diet". Take coffee and alcohol in moderation and have a restful sleep.

Talk and visit other people you know-be sure to talk to your friends, neighbors , spouses and other adults to keep you connected and recharged.

Clear your mind- stay away from the haze that family caring brings. Take time to read, listen to the music or by just lying on your bed with the door shut can do wonders.

Get organized-lack of structure and organization is bad both for the children and the parents. You must have time management to keep up with the pace of parenting. You must have the essential "to do" list  everyday. Take time to calendar everybody's activities and reorganize your home.

Decide what you want to do about romance and do it-Don't practice the phrase until the children are all grown-ups. Do what you are supposed to do with your significant relationship. Take time out without the children and have "adults vacation only". This will not only improved your couple's relationship but most your inner self and sensuality.

If your children and significant other have to be taken care of, you have the right too to be taken care of. Start taking care of yourself and you can be the best caregiver for your family.

Herword.com A Day Of Treats- An attendee review

Last  November 30, 2011  I got my passport for Herword.com "A Day Of Treats" held at Eastwood City's Central Plaza. The passport entitles every attendees for  some freebies and surprise gift prize, food and drinks. It was fun hoping from one booth to another like the Nail Art booth for a free manicure. I think it is the blockbuster among booth participants but my daughter and I did not get our free manicure as we have to wait for our numbers to be called.  Second runner up is the Photo Booth where everybody is treated for a pose with a  professional photographer who gamely direct every women's pose.

There was also some live performances featuring the quartet of :the "The Girl with the Golden Voice" and Jazz Saxophone performer and a singer , He is a good Jazz singer but fails to connect to his audience. But it was Justin Pinon who stole the limelight when he display his ability to read minds. The whole day affair which started at 11 am and until 12midnight was really a treat in all sense but the mood was  not that encouraging as the humid is so intense. This maybe the reason why resource speakers were not able to make an engaging discussions with the audience.  I was expecting more detailed legal tips from the legal expert guest but all she did was to read what's on  her power point. Well, all resource speakers  read their power point and add nothing new to it. Working girls know more about power point and they should have ask from them some new techniques..The hourly raffle adds a little excitement but failed to liven-up the mood.

In all modesty, I enjoy the affair but not that much. I just hope the next Herword.com event dedicated to women will  be more awesome and exciting. The 100 pesos worth of the passport is still worth it despite some dull moments in between the affair.

A Tribute To All Dads (poem)

"DAD"

Here's a poem written  as a tribute to all fathers of the world. The writer is unknown but I guess he's somebody who knows what it is to be a DAD.

It's So Nice To Have A Dad Around The House

Dads are special people
No home should be without
For every family will agree
They're "so NICE TO HAVE ABOUT"
They are a happy mixture
Of  a "SMALL BOY and a "MAN"
And they're very necessary
for every "FAMILY PLAN"
Sometimes they're most demanding
And stern, and firm, and tough
But underneath they're "soft as silk"
For this is just a "BLUFF"
But in any kind of trouble
Dad reaches out his hand
And you can always count on him
To help and understand
And while we do not praise Dad
As often as we should
WE love him and admire him
and while that's understood
It's only fair to emphasize
His importance and his worth
For if there were no loving DADS
This would be a "LOVELESS EARTH"

Hope all moms will agree to the message of the poem. I do 'cause I love the two
"DADS" in my life.

Three types Of Parent (Which One Are you?)

A dictator parent does not allow children to question, challenge or  disagree with his/her rules

What kind of parent are you? Here are the four types of parent and see where you fit in.

Autocratic type: The Dictator

This is when you have absolute control and powerful in dictating the lives of your children. You have domineering figure who rewards and punishes to impose your orders. You always tell your children what to do, how to do and when to do it. You never or give little room for questions, challenges or disagreements.Your children fear you rather than respect.

Permissive Type: The Doormat

You allow your children to have too much of their time and walk over you. You are totally against autocratic parenting but you're not doing anything to correct it. In your household, there's no respect for order and routine. You place few limits on your children's freedom and behave like a doormat, letting your children just to walk over you. You want to be firm but do not know what words or disciplining skills to use. You pretend to have control but do not know how to impose it.

Authoritative Type: The Active parent

You are on the middle ground between autocratic and doormat parenting. In your household, freedom is an ideal but so are the rights of others and the responsibilities that go with it. You are the family leader who encourages cooperation and stimulates learning. Your household has orders and routines and every one is treated as equally important members of the family.
If you have assessed yourself as one of these three types, there are always room for improvements and changes. The best part is you don't just admit it but do something to correct or magnify the type of parent you are. Bear in mind that what your children will become in the future is dependent on what type of parenting they received from you.

Ways to become best working Parents to your kids

In this time of financial instability, both parents, the mom and dad are forced to work outside the house to meet family's needs. It is sometimes hard to be working and at the same time being a parent. Tere are  times that you seem to neglet the other and feel guilty about it. If mom has to go out of the house and work, she can still be the Mom she should be to her kids as long as she knows the secret.

Share time. This means you share your time with them an not just spend. Sharing means doing things that both benefits you and the kids. Baking during Sunday or Saturday is great. Cleaning the house or  helping them out in their homeworks are just example of time both of you and the kids could share together.

Remember that "Little time is better tahn none". If you can't spend a half a day, an hour or two with the kids will be enough. Kids do understand and making them feel they're wanted and given attention even in small or limited time, they'll appreciate it. A lminutes to take a look at their finished art work is enough to make them know, you're trying as hard as you can to give them time.

Son't Make it Big. Sometimes as we feel guilty about giving our kids much time as we could, we tend  lessen the guilt by giving lavish rewards or gifts as if paying back what we have missed. Don't make your child feel you're paying back but do make them feel that you're trying hard to give them time and attention. A simple hug or  good night kiss is enough to make them feel you're there and not forgetting.

Parents are in control of the relationship in the family. You choose the kind of control you take in. Remember that all needs such as food, clothes, shelter are provided naturally but the love and attention is given out of choice. Kids will do even wanting with basic needs but they will not survuve without the love and attention of their parents. As the parents, you opt to gove them to your kids or else you are not entitle to be one.

Protect your kids from cold weather

Now that the cold season is officially with us, it's time to take out those jackets to protect us from this cold season. Our kids are more prone to catch the cold virus and here are some few things you can do to give them protection.

Have them drink lots of citrus fruit juices. Vitamin C is the primary protection against colds virus so let your kids have ample supply of this potent vitamin. Prepare your kids lots of juices from citrus fruits. Have them eat them raw and lace their favorite foods with them. Don't forget to give them vitamin C supplements to increased their immune system.

Get them to wear jackets and other protective clothing against damp cold wether. Let your kids be protected against the damp cold weather by wearing proper clothing. Have them wear jackets during the late afternoon when air is too damp. This is the best time for viruses to go active. Don't let your kids let out chilling. If possible keep them indoor during this time of the day.

Give them the colds shot. The best protection is of course your kids' old shot. Take them to the clinic have them have the shot. Although it is not hundred percent protection, it is still better to be protected than not.

Tell your kids to wash hands frequently. The fastest way to spread virus is through hand contact. Washing the hands often eliminate the chance of the cold virus to spread. It also gives protection to your kids catching  the virus.

Take a time to know how to take care kids with colds. Make your self equipped with the nursing care for colds. Read or find out from your health care service providers things to do when your kids is down with colds and flu. Know the sings and symptoms when it is time to see a doctor.

The cold weather is here with us. It reminds us that the holiday season is soon to come.To enjoy it , let your kids be free from any diseases brought by the cold seasons.

Shopping for your kids this Holiday Season

Shopping for your kids this holiday season  is fun .

Have  you started shopping for your kids and family for the Holiday season? Here are some tips that could help you pick the best gifts and stuff  for your kids this  coming holiday.

When shopping for kids clothes, comfort and durability are two factors that must be considered. Kids are very active and moves around. Buy clothes that are made of durable materials and can stand the rugged activities of your kids. Buy clothes that fit and make them comfortable. Don't buy clothes just because you love the style of it but rather buy something that your kid is comfortable wearing it. If your kids have allergies, avoid clothing materials that can trigger the allergens. Always buy clothes that are free of synthetic materials that can cause allergies. Kids grow fast so it's better to shop for clothes one size bitter than to allow growing allowance for future wear.
Toys make kids eyes light up and bring smiles on their lips. Make sure that materials used are non-toxin and with warranty from health authorities. Always read the label and  manufacturers' warnings. Read age recommendations and stick by the rules. This is to avoid future incidents of choking for kids. Buy toys that are educational or something that will test their  ability such as blocks buildings, puzzles, flash cards, charts and coloring books. Always refrain from those cheap stuffs  mostly made of toxin materials.

Shopping  and buying something for our love ones this holiday season brings fun . What more for our darling and precocious kids.

The benefits Of Family Eating Together

The Family that eats together stays happy together

A recent study about family relationship, says that kids  who eat with their families do better in school and are likely not to smoke, use drugs or drink alcohol nor engage in fights or any troubles than those who are left alone to eat. The eating together makes family had that chance to talk and enjoy each other. It doesn’t have to be a gourmet food as food is not a matter of importance here. Eating together also does not mean all the family sitting in one table at the same time everyday. It can be eating together in front of television and in any time as long as kids share meal with the family. According to Dr.David Ludwig, Pediatrics Professor at Harvard University and author of  the book “Ending the Food Fight”, having  dinner together is probably the most important way to promote good health and nutrition. This is because when family eats together, kids eat healthier and better. Dr. Ludwig also adds that no matter what the family eats, the process is slowed down and extends the family time.  One or two mealtime shared together is enough to have the benefits. It doesn’t have to exactly on same time but having a routine will make family sticks to the habit. Share a meal to your kids and you’ll be surprise how they will share their life with you.

A family that eats together stays happy together. Who doesn’t want this to be true?

What if your kid is the bully?

Make your kid feels he's wanted and not rejected

One of the problems that confront parents is when our kids are bullied in school. We immediately react and do every possible thing to stop these bullying acts.  With many available helps, parents have ideas of how to avoid and resolve this problem. But what if your kid is the bully himself? Here are some tips on how you can stop your kid from bullying other kids.
1.
tT    Talk to your kid- there must be some problems with your kids. Have a heart-to heart talk with him and assess what’s wrong in his behavior.  Ask why he is doing it and what makes him do it. There may be some underlying factors why he is such a bully.
2.
Fi    Find solution with him- If your kid has open up with you, try to solve the problem together. Lay down suggestions and make him feel that you are on his side and not you’re not persecuting him but clearly point out that his act is inappropriate and must be stopped.
3.
D          Divert his energies into something productive and worthwhile- Most bully kids are very active kids. Try to divert his energies and attention to some hobbies that will make him more productive and creative.  One known bully in school after being introduced to sports became the most discipline and friendliest kid in the campus. Make your bully kid feel that he is needed and loved and not prosecuted and discriminated.
4.
Avoid creating a tag of him- Even a bully won’t want to be tag as one. Avoid this tagging or labeling notion. Make him see he is capable of changing for the better and there’s always a room for him in the community and school. Make him feel he's wanted, needed ,loved and not rejected.
5.
Ask help- If your kid needs help, don’t hesitate to consult professional help. You can ask teachers and school authorities for assessing and counseling.  But make sure that your kid is not put in any compromising or humiliating conditions as this will make the problem worse.  Get his permission and explain to him why there’s a need for him to subject himself to counseling.  Give him the feel that his opinion is needed  and is given importance in solving the issue.

There’s always wrong perception about bully kids but if given the right attention and counseling, these bully kids could turn to be the most productive and successful kids in the future. What they need is understanding and enough tender loving care from people close and around him.

Relocation and your kids

There are several reasons why families have to relocate. Some are for work reasons where pboth or ne of the prents is assigned to a certin place and family has to be relocated. Some are for economic reasons where standard of living is more cheaper and affordable while some has acquired their own place or house. For whatever reason the family has to relocated,as parents we should take in consideration of how our kids can cope up with their new surroundings.

Since kids has to left behind some friends and memories that are precious to them, here are some guides of how to avaoid depresions, loneliness and the feeling of isolation among or kids.

New Friend prospect- it would be better if in the new place, your kids have already new firends prospect. Scout  and ask around the new neighborhood for possible new friend for yur kids. You can invite them in the house and let your kids know and meet them.

Kids clubs- if possible let your kids the new place kids club and encourange your kids to socialized with the kids  and join eixting kids club.

School authority-  let school authority to know that your kid is new in the place so that teachers can recommend classmates and friends.

Open house- let the kids in the new place that your home is open for them and your kid is willing to have them as friends. Have a small kids party swhere all neighboorhood or possible friends can attend. It doesn't have to big party ,just few sandwiches and juices for the kids to let them get aquianted.

Relocating to a new place sometimes brings loneliness to kids and if  ignore it, it may leads to even worst situation.Don't let your kid fear being relocated, make them feel it 's part of life and they can cope up becuse you are there to guide them.

Kasambahy Bill which is now on its third and final reading at Philippine Senate aims to increase he monthly salary of house helps. This is a very commendable  act as house-helps in the Philippines is more than a show off or a status symbol.

It is common for many middle class family to employ house-helps especially when both prents are working. Most of the household chores are delegated to house-help and most of the time includes baby sitting or actually taking care of the kids.

On this case parents should set rules and limitations of delegating the task of taking care of the kids. If possible , house-help must not share a room with your kids for security reasons.Write down what she must do and explain  what she must do in cases of emergencies. Never allow any house help to go out alone with the kids unless you tell her so. Make a lists of the task she can do in taking care of your kids like bathing and feeding. If possible set a bathing session with your kids during your free time to set as your bonding moments. This will ensure that the kids will not heavily depend on house helps. Make sure your kids understand what house-helps roles inside your family. Make it clear to them that house-helps are there to take care of the house and the kids while you are away. make the kids respect them as extended and adopted members of the family. Teach them  to treat them respectfully and accordingly. Remember that house-helps may come and go and to avoid kids suffering the pain of loss, you should try to make it clear to your kids that you are still their mother who loves them and only allow some help in taking care of them while you are outside the house.

House-helps are new a necessity when  both parents have to work. Giving them some importance is a kind deed as they take some of the burden off our shoulder. If we treat them well, they will give back the kind of service we deserve and they can be our best help in rearing good and obedient kids.

Dengue Cure-Tawa-Tawa plants

Dengue is caused by a viral infection transmitted by a mosquito bite. Aedes mpsquitoes are found to be carrier of this deadly virus that cause blood platelets to fall , caused shock and death if not treated immediately. Since there's no direct medications for this deadly disease, there are two critical factors that could save patient from having a down blood platelets. Following these simple tips may help save a life.

Proper re-hydration management- since dengue is caused by a virus, it caused acute condition of incresed vascular permeability and plasma leakage, re-hydration  in the form of intravenous fluid is applied to replace excess fluid loss. Oral re-hydration  is also recommended as to replenish body with carbohydrates and electrolytes. Herbal Medicines Management- A special  Philippines plant species called Tawa-Tawa is now gathering good reviews as potent cure for Dengue. Tonic drink from the boiled leaves and twigs  found to make blood platelets go up and based on a clinical studies conducted by St. Luke's Hospital research , there's a high results of virus flushed out  with the use of Tawa-Tawa tonic drink. It's a subtantial finding but still non-conclusives as futher studies are being conducted by the DOH research laboratoy,

Tawa-Tawa can be used as tonic drink or as capsule. It also comes in tea formed sold by a Herbal Company called CARICA. As parents, we still have to consider the best remedy for Dengue. It is still recommended to bring your child to a hospital or clinic. Herbal medicines can be of help but always ask your doctor about it.  Give these herbal remedy under your doctor's advice and guidance. Remember, it is our child's life that is at stake. Teaching Kids the Five Finger Prayer

As parents it's our duty to teach our children about God and teaching them how to pray is teaching them the basic of knowing and worshiping Him. Prayers is our means of communicating to God and it must be something that comes from our hearts and mind. Here's the Five Finger Prayer guide on teaching our child on what to tell God.

Thumb (people who are close to you) These are your close friends and family, often the first you think about when you pray. Give thanks to God and ask his protection on your parents, siblings, friends, and classmates.

Pointer (people who point the way) These are leaders in your life, such as teachers and pastors. Offer God your thanksgiving for them and ask him to help them in their important work.

Tall Finger (people in authority) The big people in the world need prayer too. Ask God to give wisdom to our government, military, and police.

Ring Finger (people who are weak) This is your weakest finger. We should remember others who are sick, live in poverty, or are treated badly. Pray that Jesus would give them new strength.

Little Finger (your own needs) God wants to hear your needs too, especially when you put others first. Pray for your own growth in mind, body, and spirit.

Ang Trip ni Rizal Arts and Gallery Tour- Only the beautiful, the truth and the good of Philippines' Arts

A contestant in one network talent search program lamented that his own mother prevented him from pursuing his artistic talent for the reasons that most artists in the Philippines starve. But his persistence and love for his arts proved his mother wrong and now he's reaping all kinds of accolade for his art works.

Parents should be the first persons to encourage their children to pursue their chosen field as children find inspiration with them. Rizal has his mother for inspiration and her persistent guidance had great influence on his arts and other pursued interest. Parents' obligations are not only to provide the basic needs of food, clothing and shelter but most of all to nourish their God-given talent or skills. Preventing them to pursue their interest is like cutting off a budding flower from its stem depriving us the existence of beautiful creations.

A Botong Francisco masterpiece
One great way to encourage a child with artistic inclination is to provide him access to his arts. It does not mean only providing him the tools he needs but to have a personal glimpse of works of arts that will inspire him more. Ang Trip Ni Rizal, a local tour group focused on making Rizal province as one of Philippines tourist destinations has a tour package that explains why Rizal is the art capital of the Philippines.

The tour includes visits to different towns of Rizal that showcase works of known Filipino masters including Carlo “Botong” Francisco, Nemi Miranda and other famous artist sons of Rizal.  A budding interest in art will find nourishment in seeing these masterpieces and notes of how these artists live for their art will inspire an innocent love for the arts. The tour also makes it possible for the budding artist to have a face-to-face encounter with the artists themselves and witness how their innovative arts style made them famous around the world.  The tour includes trips in arts galleries and interaction with a famous wood furniture maker to milestones interest in this field. The trip is not only artistic but in a way cultivates aesthetic sense in our daily living. Parents and children will surely love this amazing  Ang Trip ni Rizal Arts and Gallery tour.

As a popular First lady  had once said, arts is nothing but the beautiful, the truth and the good, let us all embrace this and share with our children  nothing but the beautiful, the truth and the good of Philippines’ Arts.

Love through a Mother’s Eyes

This is the picture of my cat Koko who’s still nourishing her two grow-up Toms. It seems odd as her two dear Toms are big enough to fend for themselves but for Koko, there’s nothing unusual to it. Koko is a mother who will never deny her kitten the love and care she unconditionally gives them. No matter how old her kitten is, it will always be her precious little baby. All mothers in the world are familiar and akin to this feeling. This is love through a mother’s eyes.A love that’s unconditional, unending, always nourishing and overflowing.

This is my entry to “Love as I see it". A project of www.islandrose.net flowers Philippines.

Fight Dengue-Do the 4 o'clock Habit

With Dengue fast spreading all over the country, it's time for us parents to protect our family by simply doing our little share of eradicating  this dreadful DENGUE. Yes, by doing our daily tasks of keeping our surrounding clean and free of mosquitos breeding places we can kick out this deadly mosquitoes.
DO THE 4 O'CLOCK HABIT
A special species of mosquitoes is said to be the carrier of this Dengue Virus. One deadly bite from a female Aedes mosquito can transmit 3 or 4 Dengue Virus. Symptoms include onset of high fever, extreme headache, joints pain and stomach. Days after patient may have red patches in skin and when already in danger stage, may have bleeding gums and nose. When not ACTED IMMEDIATELY, it may cause blood platelets to fall and cause shock and then death. It is deadly but when detected early can be prevented and treated.
Since it is caused by virus, there's no specific drug treatment and only fluid flushing is the immediately treatment plus symptomatic drugs like paracetamol for fever and pain.

Health authorities say that the only way to eradicate this Dengue Virus is to keep out Aedes mosquitoes in the environment and destroy its breeding places.
This Aedes mosquitoes bite only during daytime and found to be active  between 6 am to 10 am and 2 pm to 4 pm or until the last daylight which is before 6 pm.
To destroy its breeding places, everybody must practice the 4 o'clock habit.
  • Throw away all possible breeding places like empty bottle (without caps), old tires, plastic containers

  • Replace water in flower vases daily and drain water from dishwashers, refrigerators, air conditioners

  • Drain all stagnant rain water around and near your houses

  • Cover all drums of water and treat them with disinfectants

  • Keep your surrounding clean and dry as possible.

It is with joint efforts of parents and the community that this deadly Dengue can be eradicated Join the efforts and let's have a Dengue- free community!
